Panchiao by Chang Chao-Tang (張照堂). Photography. 1962.

Born in Taiwan in 1943, Chang has been described as a master in surrealism. His body of work is hailed as an iconic sign of the times during Taiwan’s White Terror period.

The series of photos under the name of Panchiao, the town where Chang was born, often feature silhouettes of a headless person. Chang’s works often showcase a sense of liminality–the state of being in between dream and reality. The surrealist touch delicately distances the undercurrent of despair from an observable normality. Fuzzy, disturbing and nonetheless inviting, the deliberate removal of an easily readable identity in this series is Chang’s allusion to people’s emotional state under the social and political environment of Taiwan during the White Terror Period. Chang’s experience constantly beckoned him to question where the future is heading towards despite the answer would always be dissolved in bewilderment.

If you’ve got a cosy night in and, like me, are flat skint and need a music fix to distract you from the fact that you’ve finally finished exams but can’t afford to do anything with your newfound spare time, listen to this brain-melt of a jazz record! Well keen to catch these folks if they ever make it down to Australia. 👂🏽🔥
